2011 Wayward Late Harvest Chardonnay

2011 Wayward, Late Harvest Chardonnay

91pts Stephen Tanzer's IWC Issue 168: May/June 2013

El Dorado

Our first late harvest Chardonnay made from Chardonnay grapes we picked on Nov 30, 2011 at an El Dorado vineyard sitting at 3000 feet elevation. We allowed the fermentation to start and end naturally and the resulting wine is a mere 2% RS which makes it sing with the cheese plate.

(harvested at 354 g/l sugar and bottled with 19 g/l of residual sugar; 14.1% alcohol): Hazy yellow-gold. Aromas and flavors of poached pear, melon, beeswax and candied lemon, with an herbal undertone. Sappy and penetrating, with a refreshingly dry edge to its candied orchard and citrus fruit flavors. Comes off less sweet than the numbers would suggest. Closes spicy and long, with a zesty lemon pith quality and a hint of licorice. This wine would do amazingly well with a variety of young or aged cheeses, and especially blues. (JR)
