Fenaughty Vineyard Syrah illustrates why we believe in El Dorado for Rhône varietals. 2011, the coolest year in decades, produced a Syrah that illustrates the power and beauty of the varietal. We left 33% Syrah whole cluster and included 2% co-fermented Fenaughty Viognier.
Stephen Tanzer's IWC, May 2014 92pts: Vivid ruby. A heady, complex bouquet evokes red and dark berry liqueur, incense and floral pastilles, with a smoky nuance building in the glass. Spicy, penetrating and pure, with very good depth and energy to its sappy black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. The floral quality comes back strong on the finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins and shows excellent persistence.
Tobacco, earth and herbs intermingled with violets grab your olfactory immediately. With a moment to breathe mineral, fresh meat and spice box come to the fore. Red fruits like cherry, plum and raspberry tickle the palate. Long, firmly structured yet smooth tannins coat the mouth and linger for minutes while you ponder what this wine is and what it will become.
