2013 Untended Chardonnay

2013 Untended Chardonnay

Anderson Valley

We found these 36 year old own rooted Wente & Davis clone Chardonnay vines near abandoned in the summer of 2009. Being Fukuoka fans we said why not?! This wine is a stunning example of the benefits of doing less to get more minerality, tension and cool climate Chardonnay flavors. Aromas of baked green apple, lemon pith, dried pear, quince and herbal hints are immediate but quickly followed by wet stone and a distinct saline character that speaks to the vines proximity to the Pacific Ocean.

Vinous Review, October 2016

Light yellow-gold. Candied orange, pear nectar, tarragon and iodine on the nose, joined by a deeper suggestion of honey. Shows very good energy and depth to the juicy citrus and orchard fruit and toasted nut flavors, which are underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. This reminds me a lot of an old-school Meursault. Finishes with repeating smokiness, a hint of bitter pear skin and impressive, mineral-driven tenacity. This is a far more mainstream wine than most examples from this producer, 92 points.
