The 2021 vintage brought devastating losses from our El Dorado vineyards due to the Caldor Fire. We only made 42% of our planned tonnage and made no red wine from El Dorado. In an effort to support Chuck & Ron Mansfield at Goldbud Farms, our singular grower in El Dorado since 2005 who farms 55+% of our annual production, Tracey worked closely with Chuck to pick everything that was ripe enough for White or Rosé wine days following the Caldor fire’s start. Sadly, it was not much relative to our planned tonnage but we did pick Fenaughty Vineyard Syrah & Grenache Noir, Girard Vineyard Grenache and Neighbors Mourvèdre. With 20 tons of red grapes now being made into Rosé Wine (the equivalent of 1100+ cases) Tracey decided in lieu of making what would have been the 18th vintage* of Isabel’s Cuvée Grenache Rosé from Gibson Ranch that we would make a far larger production of Rosé wine, blending all of the Gibson Ranch with the Fenaughty Grenache Noir Rosé, some of the Girard Grenache Noir Rosé and for the “special sauce” to make this Rosé sing she added 14% of 2020 Ramato Pinot Gris from Filigreen Farm. Yet another illustration of the power and beauty of blending!
The Mendocino part of this blend was subjected to reverse osmosis due to an atypical flaw that needed correcting. This technological manipulation is not used by natural winemakers.
Tasting Note: If Strawberry Lemonade was a wine, it would be this Gris Gris Rose! From its beautiful rosy hue to its lip-smakingly juicy, bright, thirst-quenching character, this is the wine for warm porch days, laughter, rope swings, big leaps and exuberance. Notes of ruby red grapefruit, cherry blossom and red Gravenstein apple lead the tastebuds on an irresistible journey. Be warned, it is almost too easy to enjoy. Pair with fruit-topped pancakes, potato chips, veggies with herb dip, ham sandwiches – and friends!
