Satay By the Bay

Friday, October 15 & Friday, October 29 we are thrilled to partner with Hammerling Winery and offer our wines with a pop-up from Satay by the Bay. We are near positive our Ramato Pinot Gris will shine with their Singaporean Street Food! But don’t take our word for it, join us and taste for yourself!

About Donkey & Goat Winery: Donkey & Goat was founded in 2004 on ecological principles driving decisions in both the vineyard and the cellar which was quite a few years before the term Natural Wine was coined in America! Known for being pioneers and one of the first to list ingredients on the label, our wines are handcrafted at our Berkeley winery from organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Sierra Nevada, Mendocino County, and Napa Valley. We follow the same ethos in making the wines resulting in a wines that are vibrant and alive and best enjoyed around a table full of food and circled with family and friends.

About Hammerling Wines: Hammerling Wines was founded in 2018. The goal of the project is to explore cool-climate California vineyards along the coast through the lens of low-intervention sparkling wine. Our winemaker and founder, Josh Hammerling, started working in cellars, vineyards, and tasting rooms in Washington State in 2014. Many low-intervention experiments in friends’ garages led to a fascination with classic and experimental expressions of sparkling wine. In 2017 he moved to Berkeley to work for Broc Cellars and Donkey and Goat while he got his project off the ground. He settled on Berkeley for his winery to take advantage of its proximity to the Central Coast to the south and Mendocino to the north. It’s the ideal location for sourcing fruit from distinctive, responsibly farmed vineyards.

About Satay By The Bay:
Satay By The Bay SF is a catering/food truck business formed by Elly Suraya Greenfield and her husband David (aka DJ Sid Presley). Elly was born and raised in Singapore, where she assisted her mother in preparing traditional Singaporean Malay meals for parties and family gatherings (she has a very big family). Nothing is being reinvented here. It’s pure old-world charm, just as you’d find in the best of Singapore’s hawker centres, or in your traditional Singaporean Malay home.

DONKEY & GOAT WINERY IS HIRING!

HOSPITALITY MANAGER

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Hospitality Manager is one of the key brand ambassadors for Donkey & Goat Winery and can convey the history and uniqueness of our winery in order to sell wine, create advocates, sign up new members and build relationships with current members. Support for Social Justice

Our personal conviction drives us to two areas of focus that drive grass roots change:

  1. VOTING in general and for the young Rising American Electorate (RAE) in particular
  2. POLICE REFORMATION to focus on Serve & Protect

This is by no means to imply there are not other, worthy recipients. This is just a start, and we encourage you to explore and support the many incredible organizations doing invaluable work to end systemic racial injustice right now.

VOTING

The absolute dire situation here can not be overstated.  Our country MUST figure out how to channel the energy driving protest and demonstration into driving an unprecedented, historically mind-blowing turnout on election day.  Michelle Obama’s post shows the translation of YOUR vote on election day to the possible lasting and meaningful impact on the American criminal justice system.

WE SUPPORT the Voter Participation Center.

The Voter Participation Center and its partner organization, the Center for Voter Information, run the nation’s largest mail-based voter registration and turnout programs, working to help members of the Rising American Electorate (RAE) — young people, unmarried women and people of color — register and vote. The RAE is now 64 percent of the voting-eligible population in America.

WE SUPPORT Dine for Democracy.

We’re thrilled to be a winery participant with Dine for Democracy, which brings people together to support free and fair elections through the joyful act of sharing food. The funds raised benefit 5 voting organizations led by youth and communities of color working in key states. You can lend support by:

1- DINE (or DRINK): order takeout or delivery from participants (like us!) on the First Friday of the month, now until the election. Order your wine here!

2- DONATE through our website (now or on the next First Friday. Together, we can make a difference.

POLICE REFORMATION TO SERVE & PROTECT

We can live in a world where the police don’t kill people. Over 1,000 people are killed by police every year in America. We are calling on local, state, and federal lawmakers to take immediate action to adopt data-driven policy solutions to end this violence and hold police accountable.

WE SUPPORT Campaign Zero and & their outstanding data driven project 8 Can’t Wait.

Funds donated to Campaign Zero support the analysis of policing practices across the country, research to identify effective solutions to end police violence, technical assistance to organizers leading police accountability campaigns and the development of model legislation and advocacy to end police violence nationwide.

OTHER RESOURCES

Following are just a few of the many available resources that we’ve found helpful.

Embrace Race

For parents trying to raise children who are thoughtful, informed and brave about race.

National Resource List

An incredibly thorough list of funds, legal help for protesters, actions that can be taken, ways to educate ourselves further and more (found via @jennyfrancois and originally published by @botanicaldyke).

Let’s get to the root of racial injustice

Megan Ming Francis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington where she specializes in the study of American politics, race, and the development of constitutional law. She is particularly interested in the construction of rights and citizenship, black political activism, and the post-civil war South. Born and raised in Seattle, WA, she was educated at Garfield High School, Rice University in Houston, and Princeton University where she received her M.A. and her Ph.D. in Politics.  This is a TED TALK from 2016 where she asks if we have the collective courage to take a stand against racial injustice TODAY.

Prawn, Avocado, Grapefruit & Fennel Salad
Pair with Still Kraisey, Merlot

Serves: 4
Recipe adapted from Nekter Wine Importers

We would love to spend some Summer days in the UK with our friends at Nekter Wine Importers! Instead, we did our traveling over Zoom, where Jared tasted our Ramato Pinot Gris with some UK wine lovers. They paired the Ramato with this refreshing prawn, avocado, grapefruit & fennel salad, but we think this perfect summer meal would also go well with our Still Kraisey “white” Merlot (plus, what a colorful combination). So take a trip with us, and enjoy a bottle of our magenta rosé and a bright, summery salad as your escape.

Ingredients

FOR THE SALAD

  • 200g fresh peeled prawns (Vegetarian? This salad is just as delicious without the shrimp!)
  • 1 fennel bulb thinly sliced
  • 1 avocado peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 pink grapefruits peeled and segmented
  • 2 handfuls lightweight greens such as pea shoots baby spinach, or watercress
  • Shaved Parmegiano-Reggiano cheese
  • Citrus dressing

FOR THE DRESSING

  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon minced shallot
  • 1 teaspoon grainy brown mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Freshy ground black pepper

How to Make It

  1. Pan fry the prawns until tender with some salt and pepper to taste
  2. Combine the fennel, avocado, grapefruits and greens in a large salad bowl. Drizzle with 3-4 tablespoons of the citrus dressing and season with the salt and pepper. Adjust seasoning and top with the shaved pieces of the Parmesan.
  3. Garnish and serve with the Prawns.
  4. Pair with a chilled glass of Still Kraisey and enjoy the colorful, Summery meal you’ve created!
